PCOS

PCOS

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common condition that effects as many as 12% of women of reproductive age. PCOS is diagnosed when at least two of the following three issues are present:

  1. Polycystic ovaries, which is diagnosed as a higher than normal antral follicle count or higher than normal AMH (anti-mullerian hormone) level in the blood
  2. Irregular cycles or missed periods
  3. Elevated male sex hormones

Other associated symptoms may include obesity, hair growth on the face and/or nipples and acne. The most common cause of PCOS is prediabetes or diabetes. Other causes include hypothyroidism, inflammation, genetics, and chemical exposure.

Chinese medicine views PCOS as two types of presentation:
  1. Deficiency of heat in the body with phlegm and dampness.  This pattern is often associated with an overweight body type.
  2. Deficiency of fluids in the body with stagnation of energy.  The pattern is often associated with a thin body type.

Western fertility treatment of PCOS includes the drug Metformin to improve blood sugar metabolism, as well as drugs that manipulate hormonal production or introduce synthetic hormones into the blood stream to induce follicle growth and ovulation.

Chinese medicine and other holistic recommendations work to regulate hormonal output, improve blood sugar metabolism, clear inflammation, and optimize thyroid function. Treatments include acupuncture, herbs, supplements, dietary recommendations, and lifestyle recommendations. Multiple research studies have found that acupuncture and Chinese herbs can reduce the symptoms associated with PCOS. Results can include regulating the menstrual cycles, higher frequency of ovulation, and normalization of hormonal levels. At Revive Acupuncture, we can order blood work to confirm the diagnosis of PCOS if you are suspicious you may have this condition.
